By State Rep. Irene Haines

After careful consideration and thoughtful discussions with my family, I have made the decision that I will not seek re-election as State Representative for Connecticut’s 34th District when my current term concludes.

Serving the residents of the 34th District - East Haddam, East Hampton, and Salem, and previously Colchester prior to redistricting, has been one of the greatest honors of my life. When I first decided to run for office, it was rooted in a simple belief: that the voices of our communities matter and that public service is one of the most meaningful ways to help shape the future of the places we call home. I am deeply grateful for the trust the people of this district placed in me and for the opportunity to represent our communities at the State Capitol.

Throughout my time in office, I have had the privilege of working alongside dedicated colleagues and outstanding legislative staff whose professionalism, insight, and commitment to public service strengthen the work we do on behalf of Connecticut residents every day. I am sincerely thankful for the opportunity to collaborate with them and learn from their experience.

If there is one legacy I hope to leave behind, it is the importance of civic engagement. Our democracy depends on people being involved in their communities and in the decisions that affect their lives. I hope that during my time in office I encouraged residents to become more engaged, ask questions, and advocate for themselves, their families, and their towns.

For the remainder of my term, I remain fully committed to serving the residents of the 34th District. I will continue working on behalf of our communities and ensuring a smooth transition for whoever the voters choose to represent them next.

Finally, I want to thank my incredible family for their unwavering support. Public service requires sacrifice not only from those who serve, but also from those who stand beside them. Their encouragement and patience have made this journey possible.

To the residents of East Haddam, East Hampton, Salem, and previously Colchester, thank you for the privilege of serving you. It has been an honor I will always cherish.
